[edit] Introduction
On 31 October 2017, the redeveloped Hastings Pier by dRMM Architects was awarded the coveted RIBA Stirling Prize for the UK's best new building.
Riba President Ben Derbyshire described the "stunning, flexible new pier", nicknamed 'The Plank', as "a masterpiece of regeneration".
Originally built in 1872, Hastings Pier was closed in 2008 and badly damaged by a serious fire in 2010. The redevelopment, by the London-based firm, took more than two years and involved turning the former pavilion into a restaurant and bar.
Derbyshire also praised Hastings' locals for finding 3,000 shareholders to buy £100 stakes in "the people's pier".
